PRESENTATION TO CITY COUNCIL MARCH 30, 2015:
City staff proposed to City Council that the area in front of City Hall and the year-round market on 6th shall become a Public Marketplace accommodating the Prince George Farmers' Market Association (PGFMA), the Wilson Square Community Market (WSCM), and community groups such as the Multicultural Society and others while 3rd Avenue would not be available for WSCM. Council invited WSCM and PGFMA to make their case before council. While the PGFMA argued that a large Public Market would be beneficial for all parties and was in support of the City's proposal the WSCM refused to participate in the creation of a large Public Market space. After hearing arguments from councillors, Mayor Lynn Hall declared that he was leaning toward supporting a Public Market space but said that he was not prepared for City Council to become a conflict solver. The result was that WSCM was allowed to occupy 3rd Avenue for the 2015 season but that, if PGFMA and WSCM could not come to an agreement, the Public Market proposal would be implemented for the 2016 season.
